Quick Tips for Writers starting out or Continuing on

Just from what I have seen or experienced, and if you are starting out. 😊

Hi, lovelies!

I was thinking of the things that I would have liked to know when I first start writing or how I should have perhaps gone another way instead of where I went, although I don’t regret all of it, there are things that I do say: hmm, maybe I could have gone the other way.

Just a few tips, not a law of life, only a view from a self-published author.

  • Show, Don’t Tell: When possible, if you can use more descriptive language or sensory details to immerse the reader then go for it. It will be worth it.
  • Read Widely: You might already be a reader, a well-rounded book lover but reading a variety of genres and styles to expand your writing skills and gain new perspectives is definitely something to consider, sometimes when I’m stuck, I go re-read a book I love or reading something completely different than usual to see if I’m inspired again.
  • Edit Ruthlessly: Be prepared to cut unnecessary words, sentences, or even entire sections to improve clarity and flow of your writing, that is why the first draft is usually not the end result, and lately I have done this a few times, I just write and then re-read it and hit delete on a whole paragraph with a bit of anxiety mixed in there but it’s getting a bit easier. 😅
  • Consistent Perspective: Maintain a consistent point of view throughout your piece to avoid confusing your readers, if it is first person or the ML or FL, if should be consistent. I have seen that the POV changes in the same chapter and that sometimes throws me off… what I have done is, if it’s going to change perspective, I wrap up the chapter and do it on the next one. But that’s me.
  • Practice Regularly: Write every day, even if it’s a little, to develop and maintain your writing skills.

I don’t do the last one as constanly as I want, there are weeks where I write everyday and in the morning, afternoon, or evening, I grab my phone and also re-read it all and write a little.

And there are other times when I spend days without writing, and it makes me a bit anxious, too, for sure, but I try my best to relax, it will come, it is happening, and I have my books out there. Try to remember to be kind to your writer self, and take care of yourself, I know that might sound like a: it’s easy to say.

But it is about trying to be calmer about the writing process, I started over ten years ago, and it was not easy in the middle, for a few of years I wrote but didn’t realise the amount of time that was passing in editing, and then I would and would get concerned about not having anything new to give you to read, but I have tried to calm down and be kinder to myself. 🥰

And well, I wrote the books in the newest series almost on a roll, it was insane how it worked out, but I haven’t edited them all, this is for the Auclairs Series, but I also try to work on the newest for the Serious Misbehaviours Series, and it can be overwhelming for my brain, so I try to take it one day at time, or one week at time. I’m rambling and I got sidetracked, but yes, write everyday if you can, keep your skills sharpened. 😂

That’s all from me, I hope these quick tips work in your new writing life.
