How short is a short story?

Hello, lovely ones! 🧜‍♀️

How is it going? It’s been some time since I did one like this. About writing.

I’ll jump right to it, how short is a short story? It differs for all of us, doesn’t it? I have read really short ones, less than 10 pages, and the authors still managed to get me in the mood and to be interested even if, when it ended, and you knew it was coming, you still had that sense of ‘the end’ and there are other times when you just want more.

In my case, as I have mentioned before, I try to make it short and end up turning the story into a novel, I mean, I am yet to write a 600 pages book but the ones that were supposed to be short, ended up taking a life of their own, the Serious Misbehaviours series was supposed to be a couple of books, now it’s a Series, and I have side stories of the characters, and sequels and prequels (still writing), it became a whole world.

And then, I tried to write a quick story for Revenge Wish, and ended up with a book that has over 20 chapters, and I have the idea for a second book. So, how short is short? Say fifty pages? Less than that? I think some of the stories I had finished would be considered short stories, but I think they step into the zone of novels or whatever you want to call them, it’s difficult to be a writer and try to keep it quick and to the point, ideas just keep pouring in your mind, and you end up with more to it than originally planned.

It’s not a bad thing to have really shorts or lenght-y shorts, lol, I was just wondering if you thought about it as well, if you decided before hand about how long it would be or went with the flow like me. 🙃

I like going with the flow, I like letting the story go and whatever comes will come; not that I don’t do maps at times because I do, I have mapped out some stories, what the chapters would include or what would happen in each scene, but those are drafts still, I sometimes do that when the story keeps playing in my head and I don’t want to forget it later on. But I also wrote Keeping Her Toy and Helping Her Boss, basically, on a roll, I wrote both in one go and then divided and conquered and edited. More like edited, re-edited, and re-wrote, but that is also part of the process.

That’s it for now, super short or not-so short are equally good stories, I enjoy both even if I sometimes write more than I had anticipated.
